Dilworth is one of Charlotte’s oldest neighborhoods, and many of its historic homes still contain original hardwood flooring that has been in place for generations. These floors often include heart pine, red oak, white oak, and other older wood species, along with different plank widths, previous repairs, additions, and natural movement from decades of settling. Restoring hardwood floors in a historic home is different from working on a newer floor because the goal is not always perfect uniformity. The goal is to preserve as much of the original flooring as possible, make necessary repairs, and bring back the natural character of the wood without erasing the history of the home.

​Older Dilworth homes commonly show evidence of remodeling and repairs completed over many years. When original materials such as old-growth Red Heart Pine are difficult to source, repair boards may be made with Yellow Pine, Red Oak, White Oak, or another available species that provides the closest practical match. Once everything is sanded and refinished, those variations often become part of what gives the floor its unique character.
